Chapter 6 · Dhyana Yoga

Bhagavad Gita 6.16

नात्यश्नतस्तु योगोऽस्ति न चैकान्तमनश्नतः। न चातिस्वप्नशीलस्य जाग्रतो नैव चार्जुन॥

nātyaśnatastu yogo'sti na caikāntamanaśnataḥ na cātisvapnaśīlasya jāgrato naiva cārjuna

Meaning

Meditation is not for him who eats too much, nor for him who eats not at all; not for him who is overly addicted to sleep, nor for him who is always awake.

Understanding this verse

Simple meaning

Krishna says that someone who eats far too much or far too little, or sleeps far too much or too little, can't find inner balance. Extremes in either direction disturb the mind.

In real life

A student pulling all-nighters before exams realises the lost sleep is making her forget what she studied.

Someone on a crash diet becomes irritable and unfocused, then switches to a balanced routine and feels better in body and mind.

Try this today: Look at your sleep and eating this week. Where are you at an extreme? Make one small correction.
