Bhagavad Gita 2.20

न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचि न्नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः। अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे॥

na jāyate mriyate vā kadāci nnāyaṃ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ ajo nityaḥ śāśvato'yaṃ purāṇo na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre

Meaning

It was not born; it will never die, nor, once having been, can it cease to exist. Unborn, eternal, ever-enduring, yet most ancient, the spirit does not die when the body is dead.

Understanding this verse

Simple meaning

Krishna describes the soul: it is never born and never dies. It is eternal and ancient, and it does not die when the body dies. Your deepest self is beyond loss.

In real life

At a funeral, a son finds comfort in the idea that his mother's essence hasn't vanished, which helps him grieve without despair.

A person facing a serious illness draws strength from the belief that who they truly are is more than their body.

Try this today: Spend two quiet minutes noticing the part of you that is aware of your thoughts, the part that has been the same since childhood.

Helps with:Grief & loss
